Patchy hair loss is associated with conditions like Alopecia Areata. Patchy hair loss is frustrating for many patients and can occur suddenly and without warning. Patchy hair loss usually presents as round bald patches in the scalp, eyebrows, or beard area. Patchy hair loss is thought to be autoimmune. It can be caused by stress and is also likely affected by genetics.

At Kamakshi Skin Clinics, Intralesional injections are an effective treatment for patchy hair loss and are commonly recommended. Intralesional injections involve injecting medication directly into the affected area of the scalp. Intralesional injections are minimally invasive. Intralesional injections use steroids while medications other than steroids can be used.

With the use of a thin needle, the platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or corticosteroid solution(es) is injected into the lower layer of skin (the dermis) where the inflammation is located and the area has been previously determined to be affected by inflammation causing bald patches. The whole process is very quick, usually several minutes in length and most people are able to tolerate the injections without anesthesia with minimal discomfort or pain.

What You Need to Know:

Frequency: Injections are given every 3 to 4 weeks until you have re-growth.

Expect to See Results: Most patients have fine hair re-growth within 4-6 weeks.

Is It Safe? There are rare systemic side effects since the injection site is localized but side effects like mild pain at the injection site or temporary skin atrophy can occur.

 Who Is it for?

Intralesional injections work best for small, clearly defined spots of hair loss but in larger areas there may be more complete treatments that involve applying topical immunotherapy and/or combinations like PRP/GFC.

After Care:

Do not touch or rub the injection site for 12 hours.

Do not apply any hair products the same day.

Discuss any additional treatments with your dermatologist before applying

Intralesional injections are an effective and targeted treatment option to restore hair in the case of patchy hair loss and are typically very fast acting with minimal downtime.
